This is an exam that will be coming out this year and we are getting ready because we want to release our CertBlaster for Security+ SY0-501 as the exam goes live at the testing centers. As eager as we are to get going, the one thing we can’t do is be faster than CompTIA on this… As authorized partners, we do get the new exam objectives well before they are released to the public but we still have to wait on CompTIA to get them to us (this has not stopped us from speculating on what objectives may be on the Security+ SY0-501 exam). However, we know there is an outer limit on that wait. That’s because CompTIA will make absolutely sure to not lose its accreditations.
Because the CompTIA Security+ exam itself is (this actually applies to all major CompTIA exams such as A+ and Network+) accredited by both the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), one of the several requirements to remain accredited is that the exam be updated every three years. That right there is our outside time limit. CompTIA is ISO/IEC 17024 certified. This means that they are certified to run a certification program (kind of the certification of certification…). Like all quality certification programs, this one focuses on having well-documented processes which include scheduled exam revisions.
According to CompTIA the Security+ exam “is scheduled to be updated to SY0-501 for the summer of 2017”. As always with CompTIA, there will be an overlap of on or about six months during which you will be able to choose to take either the SY0-401 or SY0-501 exam.
Our estimate that SY0-401 will end on January 31, 2018, with the SY0-501 exam will “in the summer” timeline will end up being September 30, 2017 (it could also possibly be August 31).
SY0-401 or SY0-501? Our Advice
“Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t” goes the saying. Security+ SY0-401 having been close to three years on the market we all know pretty well it looks like, warts and all. That’s the devil we know. Not only will figuring out SY0-501 take a while, newly released exams are notorious for their volatility with their frequent and unannounced movements, adds, and changes over their first year or so. That’s the devil we don’t know!
If a Security+ certification is in your near future, take it now, don’t wait! CertBlaster’s Security+ practice tests does a good job of preparing you for the exam. We know because as authors we have to retake that exam yearly or so and so are great consumers of learning materials.
